Building the Future Of Precision Medicine
“How do we unlock the full potential of the future of medicine?” and “How do we engage the public in new and important discussions about their health information?”
The astounding advancements in health have led to Precision Medicine, an initiative for people around the world that promises longer, happier and healthier lives and UC San Francisco was a catalyst in launching this new era of health.
While at IDEO, Caroline Flagiello and team collaborated the UC San Francisco team to design an overarching strategy and implemented a two-part solution: an innovative bespoke leadership summit (The OME Precision Medicine Summit) and a unique public engagement campaign (MeForYou.org).
At the OME Precision Medicine Summit kicked off 11 pilot projects that addressed the spectrum of issues associated with informing and engaging citizens to take control of their health, making big data accessible to inform research and health care while maintaining patient privacy, and addressing regulatory and cost barriers surrounding precision medicine.
Attendees at the OME Precision Medicine Summit included Mark Zuckerberg, California Governor Jerry Brown, Salesforce founder Mark Benioff, and 23andMe founder Anne Wojcicki, as well as top government leaders such as the Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration Margaret Hamburg, MD, and the Director of the National Institutes of Health Francis Collins, MD, PhD.
The launch of MeForYou.org was one of those initiatives. “We need people to understand the impact they could have on other people’s lives and their own health by sharing it [data] with science. That’s why we created the MeForYou.org campaign,” said UCSF Chancellor Susan Desmond-Hellmann. The campaign won a CASE Gold Medal in the “Innovative Use of Technology” category, the premier category for marketing communications for higher education.
